GLISPA x To'okina Tribal Land Conservation Association

GLISPA Fellow: Wilson Junior Maeriua

Location: Solomon Islands

TTLCA is an incorporated nonprofit community-based organization based in Su’u Village, East Are’are, Malaita Province, Solomon Islands. It was established after the members of Hunakuma tribal land decided to preserve and conserve their natural resources and biodiversity amid increasing threats from destructive industries like logging. In this video, elders from the Hunakuma explain how the conservation of their natural environment is tied intimately to their food security, cultural heritage and the preservation of traditional herbs used as medicine for generations. They also describe the steps being taken by the community to adapt and mitigate the impacts of climate change, which is having perilous impacts on their sustainable way of living.
